What is Ballroom Dancing & Dance Sport?
Ballroom dancing is any of a variety of social dances performed by couples in a ballroom. It is a man and a woman moving as one on the dancefloor, with elegance, artistry and athleticism. Dance sport is ballroom dancing taken to its most competitive level.
There is American Style and International Style. Foxtrot, Quick Step, Viennese Waltz and Waltz, and Tango are considered “smooth” dances. In most smooth dances couples appear to glide along the dancefloor; picture Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers.
Swing/Jitterbug/Jive, Mambo, Salsa, Cha-Cha, Merengue, Rumba, Bolero, Samba and Paso Doble are the “rhythm” or “latin” dances. Dancers move their hips in rhythm/latin and hold their hips steady in smooth dancing. In competitions, International Latin Division dances are Paso Doble, Jive, Rumba, Samba and ChaCha. American Rhythm Category includes the same dances as well as Bolero, Merengue and mambo/salsa. Disco / Hustle is its own category, though it is very rhythmic.
Below is a brief desciption and history of some of the dances. |
