Merengue

The Merengue is the national dance of the Dominican Republic, and also to some extent, of Haiti (in Haiti, a similar dance is called the Meringue). The word “merengue” in Spanish is a confection made of sugar and egg whites, similar to frosting or whipped cream. It is possible the dance took its name from this light, frothy confection because of the dance’s short, precise rhythms. Merengue is a quick, energetic social dance popular throughout the Caribbean and South American..
